Parallax Form

Back to Projects

Parallax Form is a photographic and structural design exploration investigating how perspective, lighting, and geometry can alter visual perception. Using folded bond paper and carefully constructed cutouts, the project transforms a simple physical structure into a series of shifting optical illusions.

The core form was designed to appear triangular from one angle while revealing a square-based structure from another, challenging the viewer’s understanding of depth and dimensionality.

Structural Construction

The form was constructed entirely from folded bond paper using precise cuts, folds, and negative space experimentation. Open cutouts were integrated into the structure to allow light to pass through and create additional visual complexity.

Lighting Exploration

Different lighting angles were tested to investigate how shadows could reshape the perception of the object. Soft gradients and high-contrast shadows became an essential part of the composition, extending the form beyond its physical boundaries.

Photographic Studies

The structure was photographed from multiple viewpoints to capture its changing geometry:

Front-facing views simplify the form into a triangular silhouette.

Overhead perspectives reveal hidden square structures.

Side angles emphasize depth, overlap, and negative space.

Transparent overlays and layered compositions create optical tension between flatness and dimensionality.

Visual Themes

Optical illusion

Perspective distortion

Negative space

Geometry and abstraction

Light and shadow interaction

Dimensional ambiguity

Final Structural Composition

The completed geometric form photographed under controlled lighting conditions to highlight shadow depth, dimensional contrast, and optical ambiguity.

Outcome

Parallax Form demonstrates how simple materials and controlled photographic techniques can generate complex visual experiences. Through experimentation with geometry, lighting, and perspective, the project transforms paper into an evolving study of perception and spatial illusion.

Great ideas take shape through structure and intention.
Let’s create something that stands out.
