Year of the Snake

Back to Projects
Year of the Snake is a motion design project exploring the transformation of static graphic design into animated visual storytelling. Inspired by the award-winning poster Chinese Year of the Snake 2025 by Michael Braley, the project investigates how movement, timing, and atmosphere can expand the emotional and visual impact of an existing composition.

The animation reinterprets the original poster through motion, bringing its symbolic forms and visual energy into a dynamic digital experience.
Concept

The project began with the idea of translating a still poster into motion while preserving the original composition’s mood and identity. Rather than redesigning the artwork, the goal was to explore how animation could enhance tension, rhythm, and visual flow already present within the piece.

The movement language was developed to feel fluid, controlled, and atmospheric reflecting the symbolic qualities associated with the snake motif.
Storyboard Exploration

The animation process started with a series of rough storyboard sketches exploring scene transitions, pacing, and movement direction. These early doodles helped establish how the static poster elements could evolve through time and motion.
Motion Development

Using the original poster as the visual foundation, animation was introduced to amplify depth, energy, and visual engagement. Movement was carefully integrated to maintain the integrity of the composition while creating a cinematic experience.

Subtle motion, layered transitions, and controlled timing were used to create a balance between stillness and motion.
Final Animation

The final piece transforms the original poster into a short animated sequence that expands the visual narrative beyond print. Through motion, the composition gains additional dimensionality, atmosphere, and emotional presence.
