Reef Knot

Back to Projects
Reef Knot is an instructional illustration project focused on transforming a physical tying process into a clear and visually structured communication system. The project explores how sequential imagery, composition, and simplification can guide users through a step-by-step process while maintaining clarity and visual rhythm.

Using photography, hand-drawn studies, and digital illustration, the project translates the physical construction of a reef knot into an accessible instructional format.
Concept

The project investigates how visual communication can simplify movement and process-based information. By breaking the knot into individual stages, the design emphasizes readability, flow, and instructional hierarchy.

The goal was to create a system where each step naturally guides the viewer toward the next action, balancing functionality with clean visual presentation.
Design Focus

  • Sequential communication
  • Instructional clarity
  • Simplification of complex movement
  • Visual hierarchy
  • Editorial layout systems
  • Process-based illustration
Photographic Documentation

The process began by physically tying and photographing the reef knot step-by-step. These reference images were used to analyze hand positioning, rope interaction, and the structural progression of the knot.

The photographic studies established the foundation for accurate visual translation.
Hand-Drawn Exploration

Each stage of the knot was then redrawn by hand to better understand form simplification, movement, and visual hierarchy. This phase focused on reducing unnecessary detail while preserving clarity and instructional accuracy.
Digital Illustration

The hand-drawn studies were translated into vector illustrations, creating a refined and scalable instructional system. Line consistency, spacing, and directional flow were carefully adjusted to improve readability and compositional balance.
Editorial Composition

The final illustrations were integrated into a flyer-style instructional layout designed to simulate a real-world educational or informational print piece. Typography, spacing, and image sequencing were organized to create a clean and intuitive reading experience.
