Ground Breaking

Back to Projects
Ground Breaking is a hand-drawn animation project focused on studying the principles of motion, physics, and character performance through traditional frame-by-frame animation. Developed entirely on twos, the project explores how movement, weight, timing, and secondary action work together to create believable and expressive animation.

Through a series of animation studies, the project investigates core principles such as inertia, anticipation, squash and stretch, overlapping action, and follow-through.
Each exercise contributed to the development of the final 2-second animation clip, where multiple motion systems and character interactions were combined into a cohesive animated sequence.

The process emphasizes experimentation, observation, and refinement, showcasing the foundational mechanics behind animated motion.
Pendulum Study

A pendulum motion study exploring inertia, acceleration, and deceleration. This exercise focuses on how weight and momentum influence movement over time.
Rocket Launch

Animation study exploring anticipation and squash-and-stretch principles before liftoff. The deformation of the rocket helps communicate stored energy and force prior to launch
Head Rotation & Hair Motion

A rotational movement study exploring overlapping action and secondary motion. As the head turns, the hair reacts with delayed movement to reinforce realism and fluidity.
Follow-Through Study

This animation explores follow-through and overlapping action through head movement and delayed accessory motion. The cap continues moving after the head stops, emphasizing momentum and physical response.
Jump Animation

A character jump study focused on timing, arcs, weight distribution, and landing impact. The animation investigates how motion transitions through anticipation, action, and recovery.
Walk Cycle

A frame-by-frame walk cycle exploring balance, rhythm, and body mechanics. The study focuses on creating believable locomotion through timing and pose variation.
Blink Cycle

A facial animation exercise focused on eye movement and blinking mechanics. The study explores timing and subtle motion used to create more natural character expressions.
Line Art Process

Line art development showcasing the transition from rough animation sketches to refined clean frames. This stage emphasizes structure, clarity, and consistency throughout the animation process.
Final Animation Clip

The final hand-drawn animation sequence combines the motion studies explored throughout the project into a cohesive 2-second scene. Animated entirely on twos, the clip demonstrates the integration of physics, timing, and expressive character movement.
